What does a breeder need to have at hand in preparation for whelping of his pregnant bitch?

You need to have a whelping area first and foremost. This should preferably be in quiet area away from people and other dogs. The area should also be sheltered against weather conditions like rain, wind and extreme sunshine.

You may also need a whelping or nesting box. This is not compulsory but highly advisable because it helps to keep your pups warm and can reduce the risk of the dam lying on and smothering her pups, if well constructed.

Next you need materials to place on the floor where dam and pups will be (ie inside the whelping box if you have one). Materials like cartons, newspapers, towels and so on could do the job.

You may also need a heat source to help keep pups warm, and other supplies like hand/face towels, puppy milk replacer, scissors, thread, baby wipes, iodine, bulb syringe/mucus extractor and vanilla ice cream may come in handy as well.

Thanks for the reply @DogMan and sorry for my delayed response. Please just to be clear, what's the bulb syringe or mucus extractor for, what do they look like and where can I get them? And also the ice cream, may I know what it's meant for. Thanks in advance.

@DogMan apart from the ones @Ajebo already mentioned, I'll also love to know what you'd use the rest of those supplies for during whelping, if you don't mind.
